Before addressing why Donald Trump is the head of the Republican Party, I wish first to answer the question of why Donald Trump is a Republican.

Trump is a Republican because:

1) He says he is a Republican

2) He is not a Democrat

3) See, # 1

Does it not lie within the power of the Republican party to define and identify its own members?

The Wyoming Republican party censured Congresswoman Liz Cheney when she ran afoul of Trump’s cult of supporters in the country’s least populous state. Likewise, state GOP pearlclutchers have been on a bender to censor and denounce other GOP elected officials like Adam Kinzinger for violating party norms. Or should I say party norm, in the singular? The only requirement that matters to the current iteration of the GOP is total blind allegiance and fealty to Donald Trump.

Now, it can be taken as gospel that many professors of loyalty and adherents to the norm are but mere cowards. They are engaged in the oldest political maneuver known to political science since Machiavelli — namely — covering one’s ass.
